FOUNDER & CTO
Sébastien Carlier's journey to founding OptiStar began over 25 years ago, rooted in a passion for solving complex problems with elegant, practical solutions. With a foundation in computer engineering from EPITA in Paris and advanced research in type theory, Sébastien has spent decades honing a unique blend of technical expertise and business insight.
His defining moment came in 2014 when, as CEO of Epixode SARL—a company he founded to scale his growing ventures—Sébastien was approached by Value Medical SAS, a small French medical device resale business struggling to compete. Off-the-shelf software couldn’t meet its needs, and custom solutions were prohibitively expensive. Drawing on his deep knowledge of systems, networking, and functional programming, Sébastien single-handedly built OptiStar. Configured as OptiDM, this platform transformed Value Medical, processing over 100GB of monthly photo data and recovering millions of Euros in net value. By 2019, when Sébastien became CTO of Value Medical, the company had grown into an industry leader, reaching a $3.5 million valuation and being acquired by Verso Healthcare—a testament to his ability to deliver affordable, impactful software for SMEs.
This experience sparked a vision: to empower SMEs everywhere with accessible, tailored software, no technical team required, while cultivating a network of developers trained in OptiStar’s proven methods. From his early days as a consultant for Hewlett Packard to co-founding Epixode and contributing to educational platforms like CodeCast, Sébastien’s career has been a tapestry of innovation, collaboration, and education. His published works on intersection types reflect a mind that bridges theory and practice—skills he now channels into OptiStar.
Today, as Founder and CTO, Sébastien leads with a mission to replicate Value Medical’s success across the U.S. His unparalleled expertise in crafting affordable, tailored software solutions, proven by OptiStar’s success with Value Medical, positions the academy to empower SMEs and developers, while his personal story drives a commitment to inclusivity, supporting neurodivergent learners and diverse talents in the field.
